Foodie days out across the UK (and here at home in Lincolnshire)
There’s something special about discovering a place through its food. From street-side sizzles and farm shop fare to long, lingering lunches in countryside pubs, it’s often the flavours we remember most. And while here at Lakings, we’re all about local quality, from our butchery to your table, we also know that great taste knows no bounds.
So, whether you’re planning a late-summer road trip, looking for a new Sunday spot, or fancy something closer to home, we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite foodie days out across the UK… with a few gems right here in Lincolnshire, too.
Borough Market, London, SE1: For those heading to the capital, Borough Market is a must. Beneath the railway arches near London Bridge, you’ll find traders who’ve been serving up fine ingredients for decades. Think fresh scallops seared to order, artisan cheese stalls that’ll let you try before you buy, and charcuterie cured just metres away. It’s a feast and a history lesson, in one.
Malton, North Yorkshire, YO17: Malton wears its ‘Food Capital’ badge with pride, and rightly so. This pretty market town comes alive with its monthly food markets and an annual Food Lovers Festival that celebrates all things local. Pop into the Talbot Yard Food Court for hand-made gelato, craft gin, and a bakery where the sourdough sells out before noon.
Bray, Berkshire, SL6: For the ultimate foodie pilgrimage, there’s Bray, a tiny village that punches well above its weight in culinary accolades. The Fat Duck (Heston Blumenthal’s multi-sensory wonderland) sits just across the street from The Waterside Inn, founded by the Roux family. It’s bucket-list territory for serious food lovers.
The Lincolnshire Wolds, Louth, LN11: Now, for something closer to home. Lincolnshire may be famed for its fields, but it’s what grows in them, and grazes on them, that makes this county special. Head out on a Wolds wander and you’ll find local producers and independent cafés tucked away in every village. A stop in Louth gives you access to some of the best food shops in the country – cheesemongers, butchers, and bakers that champion regional produce. And for a sit-down treat? The Ranch Steakhouse or The Woolpack Hotel are firm favourites. Pair it with a visit to Stourton Estates or Uncle Henry’s Farm Shop (PE20) for a family-friendly day with a real connection to the land.
Lincoln, LN1: You don’t need to leave the city for a great bite. In Lincoln, the food scene is quietly thriving. From small plates at Café Shanti to local ales at The Strait and Narrow and slow-cooked meat deep-filled into the tastiest pies at Brown’s Pie Shop, there’s something for every taste. And on Saturdays? Don’t miss the Farmer’s Market on Castle Hill – stock up on handmade pies, award-winning sausage, and seasonal veg.
