They say things come in threes and as we head into February, we’re going to focus on a trio of diary dates; cooking family-friendly meals for half-term, the romance of Valentine’s Day, and saying ‘thank you’ to mum on Mother’s Day.

Are you ready for the half-term?

Let’s hear it for half-term. No school runs, no pack-ups to make, lazy mornings, and a more laid-back bedtime (or not, depending on your parenting style). Whatever your plans, one thing we can guarantee is there will, at some point, be cries of ‘I’m hungry’. So, let our recipe ideas inspire you to eat well with your family. Our butchery is filled with local produce from Lincolnshire pork to spring lamb and succulent beef supplied from a farm just a few miles up the road from our Louth-based shop. Our favourites are made using no-fuss beef mince – Spaghetti Bolognaise can be on the table in 30 minutes, or, if you have more time, make a hearty Cottage Pie. Easy Sunday roasts are a popular option and our Chickens have been farm-reared under the highest welfare standards and are simply bursting with flavour. If you’re planning days out and need to put a picnic basket together, pick up some treats from our deli. Choose from perfectly cooked sausage rolls made using our traditional Lincolnshire sausages on-site or be tempted by our homemade quiches and pork pies, and don’t forget to pack the pickles – we stock a host of condiments to serve as accompaniments.

The only downside to eating hearty, delicious food during half-term is school dinners might not be quite so appealing when your youngsters head back to the classroom.

Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14th

There is still time to plan a sumptuous meal to impress loved ones and thanks to our next-day delivery service via DPD, there’s no excuse for serving anything but the best. Choose from the finest steaks – our Chateaubriand is the ultimate in luxury – but pork fillet, lamb shanks, premium chicken breasts, or first-class roasting joints are still sure to ‘wow’ your Valentine. If you’re struggling for a gift for your foodie partner, consider purchasing an online Lakings gift voucher and let them select from our phenomenal range of British produce.

Mother’s Day, Sunday, March 19th

Start planning your Mother’s Day treat now. What will you cook?

We’re big fans of a roast dinner because it’s a sure-fire winner with guests young and old, and it’s relatively easy to make – just keep an eye on the timings! Brunch is another tasty option – rustle up a hearty English breakfast using our perfectly-cured bacon and Lincolnshire sausages. Take it up to mum in bed when she’s enjoyed a lie-in, and don’t forget the chilled Mimosa on the side.

Finally, planning for FEASTER

Can we squeeze in a fourth reminder? Easter, or as we like to call it ‘FEASTER’ will be here before you know it. Get prepared early – plump for a tender grass-fed lamb joint and pop it in the freezer now. You’ll have one less thing to think about when the family gathers for what has now essentially become Christmas dinner ‘Round II’.

Easter Sunday falls on Sunday, April 9 this year and Lakings will have a fully-stocked butchery ahead of the four-day holiday, with sustainable and ethically-produced meat sourced locally from Lincolnshire farmers to help you celebrate.
