International Women’s Day, March 8, 2024

This year sees International Women’s Day spreading the message: ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’ and it’s certainly a theme we support throughout our business.

We are proud of our relationship with our ambassador chef, Lincolnshire-based chef Rosie Dicker, who has created a selection of delicious dishes using Lakings’ quality products.

From how to make the perfect Hollandaise sauce for your poached eggs to tips on creating a stunning table centrepiece for Mother’s Day On Sunday, March 10, Rosie is a tour de force in the culinary world.

Cordon-Bleu trained Rosie has 25 years of experience having worked in several commercial kitchens around the county and as a private chef.

Rosie explains how her approach to food is more about the classics than “reinventing the wheel”.

She says: “I suppose you could call my food classic but contemporary at the same time. I feel very strongly about doing what I do but well and not reinventing the wheel.

“I’m all about eating for flavour and season, that’s one of my philosophies. If you give it some good energy and love, you won’t go far wrong.”

With Mother’s Day this Sunday and Easter just around the corner, Rosie’s philosophy is one we can endorse.

If you are looking for meal inspiration – whether a traditional roast or a more exotic blend of flavours, check out Rosie’s delicious recipes, including Blood Orange Glazed Gammon Joint – a dish we believe should be eaten any time of year, not just at Christmas, Fragrant Roast Pork Shoulder, which is a spicy take on a traditional roast, or a quick and easy recipe of Parmesan Crusted Lamb Chops – perfect for savouring the flavours of the new season.

And if you want to serve mum breakfast in bed, rustle up a brunch of ham and eggs, smothered in the ‘ultimate’ Hollandaise sauce. We think it’s a better gift than chocolates and flowers (although, mums probably won’t say no to those gifts either!)

Celebrate National Butchers Week, March 4 to March 10

Calling all meat lovers and culinary enthusiasts, it’s time to sharpen your knives and appreciate the craftsmen behind your favourite cuts.

National Butchers Week runs from March 4 to March 10 and shines a spotlight on the skills, tradition, and importance of local butchers like Lakings in communities across the UK.

Proud ambassadors of this skilled profession, here at Lakings, we prioritise high-quality, sustainably produced meat, expert cuts, and a personalised service, which has earned us five stars on Trustpilot.

Based in the heart of the rolling Lincolnshire Wolds, our business is built on more than 100 years of experience. We have played a vital role in sustaining the fabric of local farming economies, and work almost exclusively with Lincolnshire farmers and suppliers, as well as raising a herd of award-winning sheep to supply our butchery with delicious grass-fed lamb.

In addition to economic and culinary aspects, National Butchers Week highlights the importance of sustainability and ethical practices in the meat industry. We prioritise sourcing from sustainable and humane suppliers, promoting animal welfare and environmental conservation.

Every time you visit Lakings shop, you access fresh, ethically sourced, not forgetting flavoursome meat and support British farmers.

National Butchers Week also serves as an opportunity to highlight our craftsmanship and expertise. Our skilled team members undergo rigorous training to perfect their skills in meat selection, preparation, and presentation. Their knowledge ensures our customers receive personalised advice on cuts, cooking methods, and recipes, enhancing the overall culinary experience.

The week also encourages awareness of the nutritional benefits of eating high-quality meats as part of a balanced diet.

We can offer guidance on cuts, portion sizes, and cooking methods, promoting healthier eating habits.

During National Butchers Week 2024, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating our profession’s dedication, expertise, and commitment to delivering exceptional products and service to communities across the nation.

Let’s hear it for British Pie Week, March 4- March 10

As if one awareness week isn’t enough, this week is also British Pie Week, which celebrates the rich heritage and versatility of pies in the UK.

But do you know what qualifies as a pie? A pie in its purest form is defined as a filling encased in pastry and baked, pies range from savoury to sweet, with various pastry options, from puff to shortcrust.

So, quiches don’t count but Cornish pasties do!

Some pies – such as the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie, are even recognised in the European Union as having prestigious Protected Geographical Indication status, which guarantees a product’s characteristics or reputation, authenticity, and origin.

Here at Lakings, we are renowned for our diverse pie range, which includes quintessential family favourites like Old Fashioned Steak Pie and Chicken and Mushroom Pie. Our delicious selection caters to both savoury and sweet preferences, from hearty Lincolnshire pork pies to traditional favourites like our Apple Pies, made with a wonderfully delicious crust and filled with sweet, juicy apples.

The pinnacle of British Pie Week is the British Pie Awards, held in Melton Mowbray, where nearly 1,000 pies are judged annually. The event crowns the Supreme Champion, showcasing the best of British pie craftsmanship.

British Pie Week is the perfect excuse to sample a variety of pies. The only dilemma you’ll face is which Lakings pie to try first.
