As summer reaches its peak, August brings a glorious abundance of flavour and freshness. Here at Lakings of Louth, we’ve always believed that food tastes better when it’s in season – and even better still when it’s local.
Eating with the seasons isn’t just a passing trend. It’s a return to how things used to be – rooted in rhythm with nature and in support of the people who grow, rear, and make the food we all enjoy. It’s better for our plates, better for our region, and better for our planet.
Why Eat Seasonally?
Firstly, and quite simply, it tastes better. When fruits, vegetables and even meats are harvested or reared in their natural season, the result is unbeatable flavour. That first bite of a just-picked tomato or tender lamb in its prime is all the proof you need.
And, when you consider this, it should come as no surprise that when choosing seasonal produce, you’re choosing fresher produce. Naturally. Seasonal food spends less time in storage or in transit. That means fewer food miles and more nutrients on your plate, not to mention fewer preservatives.
For us, an important factor – and one that has been key to our survival over the years – is that supporting local produce also means supporting local farmers and growers. We work with trusted, local suppliers who care as much about quality and sustainability as we do. By choosing what’s in season, you’re helping to sustain jobs, skills and family farms across Lincolnshire and beyond.
What’s in Season Now (The August Edition)
August is generous in its offerings. Here’s what you can expect to be popping up this month, here in Lakings as well as across the board:
Grass-Fed Lincolnshire beef – With cattle raised on summer pasture, our beef is beautifully marbled and rich in flavour. Perfect for quick grilling or a weekend roast.
New season lamb – August lamb is tender, flavourful and ideal for anything from a Sunday roast to spiced skewers on the barbecue.
Pork from trusted local farms – Think sizzling sausages, meaty chops or a slow-cooked shoulder for pulled pork. There’s nothing better.
We’re surrounded by some of the UK’s richest farmland, which supplies the nation and beyond with so much fresh produce, and at this time of year, it’s in full swing:
- Tomatoes – ripe, juicy and bursting with sunshine
- Courgettes – soft, sweet and ideal grilled or sautéed
- New potatoes – earthy and creamy, made for butter and mint
- Runner beans – a classic summer veg, full of crunch
- Sweetcorn – the barbecue’s best-kept secret
- Beetroot – earthy, vibrant and beautiful raw or roasted
Fruit fans can also enjoy:
- Strawberries and raspberries – still going strong and perfect for puddings
- Plums and apples – ready for crumbles or chutneys
- Blackberries – popping up along hedgerows and ripe for picking
Every cut we offer and every product we recommend is chosen with care. We know where it comes from, how it was produced, and when it tastes its very best.
By embracing seasonal eating, you’re not just enjoying food at its peak, you’re supporting the fields and farms that make Lincolnshire and the UK proud. You’re helping small producers thrive and playing a part in a more sustainable food future.
And the best part? It’s absolutely delicious.
