It is said that love comes in many forms. Romantic love, parental love, self-love, heck, even the love for our pets or the natural world – all count as ‘love’.

So, as we get ready to celebrate the most romantic day on the calendar – St Valentine’s Day – we’re here to help you feed the ones you love, whether that’s your partner, your family or even your pooch.

And, with Lakings ethically sourced British produce, you can create a divine meal knowing the provenance of every morsel – which, we hope, means you’ll love shopping with us, too.

So, what to cook this Valentine’s? You can’t go wrong with steak.

There’s something special about eating a juicy steak in a restaurant but many people feel intimidated about cooking this cut of beef at home.

Lakings ambassador chef and restaurateur Rosie Dicker is often asked how to cook the perfect steak at home and has devised a foolproof method for both skilled cooks and amateurs alike to follow.

Rosie recommends using rib eye and says, ‘the flavour you get from this cut is just over and above any other’.

Lakings traditionally matured rib eye steaks are generously marbled and bursting with the mellow flavour you’d expect from prime rib. They are both juicy and succulent when cooked. For a restaurant-style feast, serve with hand-cooked fries and a delicious pepper or Diane sauce, available from our pantry section online or in our shop.

Family meal ideas

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a school night, so if you’re a parent there’s a strong possibility the table will be set for more than two.

Whether you’re having a teatime treat of Lakings traditionally-made Lincolnshire sausages and mash, or a hearty beef mince chili con carne with nachos, this is the perfect opportunity to have conversations with youngsters about where the food on their plate comes from and in doing so, to foster a love of eating sustainably-produced food.

Galentine’s Day recipe inspiration

In recent years, there has been something of a push against the traditional idea of Valentine’s Day, with plenty of singles now celebrating ‘Galentine’s Day’ – typically a night for girls to get together and have fun. But what to cook if you’re throwing a Galentine’s gathering? Chef Rosie recommends serving Pork chops with chimichurri. Quick, easy and impressive – the chops take just five to six minutes to cook, which leaves plenty of time for chatting and sipping that chilled bottle of Pinot Noir.

Meals for one

Finally, what if you’re dining alone? This is the perfect opportunity to get onboard with the ‘self-love’ movement and indulge yourself. Eat your favourite dish – with no compromises and no sharing!
